TRADITIONAL FAMILY RUN COUNTRY PUB IN THE HEART OF THE CHALKE VALLEY

Welcome to
The Talbot Inn

The Talbot Inn at Berwick St. John is a haven on the Wiltshire / Dorset border for people who love pubs with real character. Soak up the atmosphere in our unspoilt bar and dining room, or soak up the sunshine in our beautiful garden.

OUR PUB & GARDEN

The Talbot Inn at Berwick St. John dates back to the mid-17th century. This unique parish is at the head of the Ebble Valley in the Chalke Valley, straddling the Cranborne Chase, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We are a traditional pub dining restaurant near Shaftesbury offering good home cooked food with plenty of variety. A CAMRA member too, we pride ourselves in supporting local breweries and have 4 very active pumps, providing beer of varying strengths, colours and flavours.

Visitors can choose to keep warm by the fire under our fabulous inglenook fireplace or watch the world go by from outside dining tables at the front or enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Martin’s beautiful beer garden at the rear.

FOOD& DRINK

Our menu caters for everyone, with all dishes carefully produced by our chef. Favourite meat dishes include Slow-Roasted Pork Belly, Pan Fried Chicken Breast wrapped in Prosciutto stuffed with Mozzarella and Sun-Dried Tomatoes, Pan-Fried Calves Liver and more. Mid-week Fish lovers can enjoy Fresh Fish from Poole and the West Country and of course our sublime Light and Crispy Beer Battered Cod. Vegetarians can choose from an authentic Thai Green Vegetable Curry or a Mediterranean Vegetable Tart to name a few.

From September – mid April a traditional Sunday Roast is on offer rotating weekly between Topside of Beef and Shoulder of Lamb or Topside of Beef or Shoulder of Pork.

A sumptuous selection of homemade seasonal desserts will perfectly round off your meal.

All dishes use locally sourced ingredients where possible, and our chalkboard specials change frequently to reflect what’s best in season. We are sympathetic to dietary requirements and happy to provide alternative solutions where possible.

EXPLORE BERWICK & BEYOND

The Talbot is situated 5 miles east of Shaftesbury, a market town made famous from the charming 1973 Hovis bread advert and the spectacular views on offer from Gold Hill. 14 miles west lies the Cathedral City of Salisbury, home of the Magna Carta, one of the most celebrated documents in the history of England.

The miles in between these two iconic places boast original ox droves circuits for off road cyclists and walkers, the ancient ruins of Old Wardour Castle as featured in the 1991 feature film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and on the chalk downs above Berwick, the early Iron Age hill fort of Winklebury Hill. On a lofty ridge 260m above sea level, the hill fort commands an extensive view stretching as far as the Isle of Wight on a clear day.
